My objection to democracy, or even our republic as it is operating, is that the majority is like a mob that lacks reason and can be controlled by mass media. They're fickle, ignorant, self-serving ... certainly unfit to govern.
Did anyone see Charlie Wilson's War? Were you moved by it? So, the mob was against Vietnam, and we screwed up the end game in Afghanistan, so you think we'd be happy with what we're doing in Iraq ... No! The mob is never happy.
The mob wants government controlled health care. Even though it's evident that the government is the most incompetent, inefficient manager of anything, the mob wants the security. Never mind working for a better way of life ... give us security now, make those who worked and managed their household well fund those who squandered their opportunities. The same holds true for taxes; penalize the hard working for their diligence. The mob likes socialism; they did in the former USSR, Cuba, etc ... until the romance wore off and they found it didn't work.
Our republic suffers from this ill too. A very small percentage of people are aware of the issues. People who are aware of the facts can debate the issues, but the mob takes anything they hear at face value and doesn't put the effort into thinking for themselves. So, in the end the candidate who can afford the most advertisement wins. And almost every candidate spins everything in some fashion.
What we need are elected statesmen who are willing to examine every issue and do what's in the best interest of the nation. What we have are politicians who do and say what they have to get themselves into office, often owing favors to their supporters. We need an overhaul of the campaign laws. All the presdential candidates agreed and said that if they became president they would change those laws ... another illustration of my above point -- as members of the legislative body they take no action to reform these laws, but promise that when we elect them head executive they will make laws. I wonder if any of them passed third grade civics? |
